Eisenhower (CVN-69) arrived under tow at Newport New Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. and begun a three year refueling and comprehensive overhaul (RF/COH). Due to Operation "Iraqi Freedom" and resulting higher priorities, Eisenhower is now scheduled to complete her RF/COH on Nov. 6, 2004. Due to the War on Terrorism and Operation "Iraqi Freedom" the RF/COH for the next ship, Carl Vinson (CVN-70), is has been postponed one year from FY 2005 to FY 2006. Except for this delay, for the next twenty years at least, the Navy will be minus one carrier in the force level strength as each Nimitz Class undergoes the three year RF/COH. Instead of the 12 operational carriers the Navy officially says it really has only 11 operational carriers. All active air-wings have a VRC detachment assigned when deployed. These detachments are not permanently assigned to the air-wing and do not operate with the air-wings when not deployed. 1. Naval Reserve Air-wing CVWR-20 based at NAS Atlanta, Marietta, GA. CVWR-20 is not assigned a VS squadron. During exercises or time of war, an active duty squadron would join the wing. 2. VAW-77 is officially attached to CVWR-20. However, her mission is strictly drug enforcement and does not include any type of carrier operations. VFC-12 and VFC-13 are Naval Reserve adversary squadrons designed to train Navy pilots to fight different modern foreign fighters that may be on the other side in a war. They are considered non-deployable. The two squadrons replaced the active duty "Aggressor" squadrons VF-43, VF-45 and VF-126. Home base also moved from Kamiseya, Japan to Misawa, Japan effective this date. Nov. 1 VFA-102 ("Diamondbacks") Trans. from NAS LeMoore to NAF Atsugi effective this date to replace VF-154 in CVW-5, the air-wing assigned to USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). NOTE: A 6th VAQ squadron for use in expeditionary warfare was to have been established on Aug. 1, 2002 to support the other five Expeditionary Warfare VAQ's. This was made evident by Kosovo Air War which proved there were not enough "Prowler" aircraft to cover all of the Navy's and U.S. Military's needs. All Expeditionary Warfare squadrons are land-based and are not intended for carrier operations. All are based at NAS North Island. Activation was postponed until Spring 2004 due to shortage of "Prowler" (EA-6B) aircraft. It's activation was cancelled in March 2004 due to a chronic shortage of "Prowler" (EA-6B) aircraft due to cannibalization and shortage of aircraft due to center wing section and outer wing panel problems. Further, requirement for the aircraft of the expeditionary squadrons for use in Operation "Northern Watch" and Operation "Southern Watch" no longer exists. -Samuel Loring Morison |
