Chris Davies joined the Royal Navy in April
1984 as a Direct Graduate Entry Officer after obtaining a Degree in Applied
Physics for the University of Surrey. After Fleet training, which included an
operational deployment to the South Atlantic, he completed a number of
watch-keeping appointments prior to specialising as a Mine Clearance Diver (MCD)
IN 1988. Subsequent appointments to HMS BROCKLESBY, as an operations Officer
and HMS BERKELEY as the Executive Officer followed, with both ships deploying
to the Arabian Gulf to clear minefields laid during the Iran/Iraq war in the
1980's. He was selected for Principal Warfare Officers (PWO) Course in 1991.
On completion of the warfare training, he was
appointed as PWO in HMS GLASGOW, undertaking a further deployment to the
Gulf region as well as being involved in Maritime Interdiction Operations off
the coast of the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. In April 1994, he joined Staff
of the Flag Officer Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland as the
Staff MCD Officer, an appointment which included Command of the Area Flag
Officer Surface Flotilla, at the Fleet HQ Northwood, before being selected to
Command HMS CHIDDINGFOLD in late 1998. Following a throughly enjoyable 2
years back at sea, he subsequently served as one of the Warfare Banch Career
Managers before being re-appointed, on selection for Commander, to the post of
the ASW Officer on the staff of the Commander Striking and Support Forces (Souther
Europe), in Bella Nepoli. Reluctantly returning to the UK in June 2004, he
joined the policy and Commitments are of the MOD, working within the
Directorate of Counter Terrorism Contingency Planning before returning to sea
in command of the third and subsequently the first Mine Countermeasures
Squadron in December 2005. He assumed command of Standing NATO Mine
Countermeasures Group 1 in January 2008.
Chris lives in Hampshire. His interests include
hill walking, in company with his dogs and a passion for the game of Rugby
Union, which to the detriment of his long suffering team mates he plays with
more enthusiasm than skill.
