Fregattenkapitän Eike Tammen

Born in Brake (Northern Germany) in 1966, Eike Tammen joined the German Navy as a conscript in 1986. After an assignment as radio operator onboard the Minehunter “Göttingen” he began his Basic Officer Training at the Naval Academy, Mürwik in 1988. From 1989 until 1993 he studied “Law and Government” at the Bundeswehr University, Munich and graduated in international and martial law.

The civilian studies were followed by Watch Officer Courses attended at the Naval Academy and the Naval Operations Schools in Eckernförde and Bremerhaven with specialization in mine warfare. Until 1997 he served in several positions (Navigation, Operations and Executive Officer) on Type 332 Minehunters of the 1st German Minesweeper Squadron. During this period Eike Tammen participated four times in STANAVFORCHAN / MCMFORNORTH. Thereafter he attended the Mine warfare Long Course at the Naval Operations Schools.

In 1998 he assumed command of Minehunter “Grömitz” (Type 332) for three years. He took part in NATO Operation ALLIED HARVEST, PfP Operation OPEN SPIRIT and again sailed with the MCMFORNORTH. Subsequently he served as Assistant Branch Chief, Naval Staff, Operational Policy Matters, Federal Ministry of Defense, Bonn for nine months. From 2001 until 2003 he attended  the National General/Admiral Staff Officer Course at the Bundeswehr Command Staff College, Hamburg

As Principal Staff Officer and Deputy Squadron Commander he joined the 5th Minesweeper Squadron (TROIKA System). During this time he acted as commander for the tri-national exercise BALTICA05 and took part in several national and international exercises like BRILLIANT MARINER. His latest post was in Berlin as Assistant Branch Chief,  Federal Ministry of Defense. Assumed duties as Commander, SNMCMG2, on 11 June 2008.

His military awards include the Gold Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr.

Eike Tammen is married, with two sons. He likes sports (sailing, kayaking, jogging, skiing, motorcycling), international and security policy, and naval history.
