From being the Fleet flagship at the International Fleet Review in June, HMS Invincible paid-off into extended readiness on 1 August. She entered Portsmouth for the last time to a 21-gun salute, water displays from local naval tugs, a T4 Harrier ‘bowing’ in honor and a flypast by three AEW Sea King helicopters. Her paying off pennant is barely visible between the funnels, hanging limp due to a lack of wind. She will be decommissioned on 3 August prior to being laid-up. She will almost certainly be sold off before too long. Photo by Gary Davies/Maritime Photographic.
